Atlas granted carbon sequestration agreement by the Government of Alberta

On June 25, 2024, the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub was granted a Carbon Sequestration Agreement (CSA).

Approval unlocks carbon storage operations

Atlas was the first hub operator to sign the CSA following a competitive process developed by the Government of Alberta in its selection of potential hub operators. 

This agreement is a pivotal milestone for the project as carbon sequestration agreements ultimately allow for the injection of captured CO2 into the pore space of a defined deep subsurface formation. Without it, Atlas would not be able to operate a carbon storage hub. The agreement also grants Atlas with legal rights to drill wells, conduct evaluations and tests, and to monitor and inject CO2 into the approved pore space known as the Basal Sandstone Unit (BSU).

Atlas advances carbon storage hub project and Shell approves Polaris carbon capture project

On June 26, 2024, Shell and ATCO EnPower made the Final Investment Decision to proceed with the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub.

Shell, in partnership with ATCO EnPower expands Alberta CCS with Atlas

Shell is a 50/50 partner with ATCO EnPower in the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub. The first phase of Atlas will provide permanent underground storage for CO2 emissions generated in the Alberta Industrial Heartland region.

In addition to Atlas, Shell also announced FID for Polaris, a carbon capture project at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park, Scotford in Alberta, Canada. Polaris will be the first customer for the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub.

Polaris is designed to capture approximately 650,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from the Shell-owned Scotford refinery and chemicals complex.

Polaris will have the potential to reduce Scope 1 CO2 emissions at Shell’s Scotford refinery by capturing and storing up to 40% and by up to 22% at the chemicals complex.

CO2 emissions captured by Polaris will be sent to the Atlas Hub via pipeline to storage wells located in Strathcona County. CO2 will be stored there approximately two kilometres underground in the Basal Sandstone Unit (BSU).

Both projects are expected to begin operations by the end of 2028.
